HOW DO I APPLY FOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION?

If you have lived in your home as of January 1st of the calendar year you’ll want to consider filing for homestead exemption, which will save you money on your property tax bill.   The requirements for filing are:

  1.     Property owner must own and live in the property as their primary residence as of January 1 of the tax year
  2.     The property owner must live in the property as their primary residence and not receive homestead exemption on any other property – this includes properties in other counties & states.
  3.     Only one homestead exemption can be claimed between husband and wife.
  4.     All vehicles owned by the property owners must be registered in the county where you apply for Homestead Exemption.
  5.     All applicants for Homestead Exemption must state whether they are a U.S. citizen or a qualified alien or nonimmigrant under the Federal Immigration Nationality Act (if the latter you must submit documentation for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.)

Also note:

  1.     If you are adding or deleting a person’s name on a deed, you must re-file for homestead exemption.
  2.     If you have a change in ownership, name, or spelling correction, you must re-file for homestead exemption.
  3.     Refinancing your home does NOT affect homestead exemption.
  4.     There is NO FEE FOR FILING FOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION!
